Just try not to be charmed by the new Naked Gun teaser

Rebooting a classic and beloved franchise is always a tall order, so news of The Naked Gun starring Liam Neeson was met with some understandable skepticism. But in the newly released Naked Gun teaser, Neeson applies himself to the role with aplomb and comically kicking ass in a school girl’s kilt before declaring himself “Frank Drebin, Police Squad—the new version.” C’mon, you’ve gotta be at least a little bit tickled.

This Frank Drebin is not a replacement for the late Leslie Nielsen, whose name bears an odd similarity to his successor’s. No, Neeson’s Nielsen’s son in the new version of The Naked Gun. (Try saying that five times fast.) In fact, based on the teaser, we might be able to subtitle this film “Daddy Issues.” There’s a whole room where the police squad gathers to pay tributes to their dead dads, which includes Drebin Sr., Captain Ed Hocken (whose son is being played by Paul Walter Hauser), and even Detective Nordberg. You thought there wouldn’t be an O.J. Simpson shout-out? Think again!

The Naked Gun teaser doesn’t give much else away—there’s no glimpse of star Pamela Anderson in this clip, for instance. But there’s enough here to stir up some mild interest, so consider us teased. The film is directed by The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer, which is fitting as much of The Lonely Island’s longform work feels in direct conversation with ZAZ. (Andy Samberg has said that the trio were “big into Police Squad and the Naked Gun movies, and all the Zucker Brothers stuff” growing up.) Schaffer co-wrote the movie with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, who all collaborated on Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers. Seth MacFarlane, who also loves a good gag, serves as producer. In addition to Neeson, Hauser, and Anderson, the cast also includes CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, and Danny Huston. The Naked Gun premieres in theaters August 1.
