Sunday was a special day across MLB — and for the Kansas City Royals.
MLB’s Lou Gehrig Day is being held June 1-2 around the league. The Royals wore a special “No. 4” patch on their uniforms to honor Lou Gehrig’s legacy on Sunday against the Tigers.
They marked the day in other ways, too.
Prior to Sunday’s matchup, Bobby Witt Jr. was named a finalist for the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award. The award is given to the player who best exemplifies the spirit and character of the former MLB slugger.
Witt also was present as the Royals gifted Sarah Nauser, a Blue Springs native battling ALS, with a special Royals wheelchair.
Nauser was diagnosed with ALS in 2018. She has been a presence around the team for years and continues to spread a message of awareness of ALS.
KC fell 1-0 in Sunday’s game, dropping two of three to the Tigers in this weekend’s series.
