HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – A wildfire burning in Carolina Forest is forcing people to evacuate their homes.
As of writing, data from the South Carolina Forestry Commission shows that the fire is burning by Covington Drive and is around 1200 acres in size and 0% contained. It was around 600 acres late Saturday night, effectively doubling in size overnight.
Horry County Fire Rescue said in a statement overnight that no injuries have been reported from the wildfire, and no buildings have been destroyed.
HCFR added that anyone not under evacuation orders in Carolina Forest should monitor the forecast and be prepared.
Overall, Horry County said in a Sunday morning update that there are evacuations in different portions of seven different neighborhoods in Carolina Forest.
A list of evacuations that the fire has forced can be viewed below. Evacuees are asked to head to the Carolina Forest Recreation Center.
- Blackberry Lane from the intersections of Spring Lake Drive, including Pennyroyal Court, Alyssum Court and Bluebonnet Court in the Spring Lake community.
- Harvest Drive from Moonbeam Court to Tidelands Court in the Waterford Plantation community.
- Covington Drive from Summerhill Drive to the community center in the Covington Lakes neighborhood.
- Arrow Wood Court, Indianola Court and Tuckahoe Road in the Walkers Woods neighborhood. Residents of Tuckahoe Road were previously allowed to return home, but HCFR added the street back to the evacuation list overnight.
- Areas of the Indigo Bay, Summerlyn and Farm neighborhoods. HCFR stated overnight that the evacuations for these neighborhoods should “remain in place until at least daybreak.”
- Avalon neighborhood
- Wyandot Court was originally included in the list, but HCFR stated Saturday night that residents could return home.
WHERE TO GO
The county said there is no timeline for when residents can go home, adding that 52 people have checked into the Red Cross shelter at Carolina Forest Recreation Center.
Horry County said the shelter has since transitioned from county management to being managed by the American Red Cross.
The Red Cross said it is looking for monetary donations from the community to buy supplies for people impacted by the fire. The Red Cross is not accepting clothing donations at this time.
