Maple Leafs win first Stanley Cup since 1967 — according to video game

Good luck to the makers of NHL 25.

The video game, in its annual playoff simulation on Saturday, predicted the Toronto Maple Leafs will win the Stanley Cup, ending the drought that dates back to 1967, by beating the Colorado Avalanche in seven games during the final.

Like many before it, NHL 25 thinks it will nail the end of the curse. But if history is any indication, it will see its prediction go up in flames.

But while Auston Matthews hoisting Lord Stanley’s mug may be the most unbelievable thing about the predictions, Toronto’s route to the final is surely second.

NHL 25 says the Leafs will sweep the eighth-seeded Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference final after the Habs upset the East-best Washington Capitals and the Carolina Hurricanes in five games each during the first two rounds.

Toronto’s path also includes six-game series wins over the Ottawa Senators and Florida Panthers.

In the West, the video-game simulation spat out a seven-game defeat for the Edmonton Oilers against Los Angeles, with the Kings finally getting the best of their Pacific Division rival.

The Winnipeg Jets will get past the St. Louis Blues in seven games before falling to the Avalanche in five, while Colorado will top the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 7 of the West final.
