SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The Salt Lake City Marathon is coming up this weekend, and authorities are shutting down hundreds of intersections to protect the approximately 10,000 athletes participating.
The 2025 Salt Lake City Marathon — which includes a marathon, half-marathon, 10K, 5K, Kids’ K, and a Bike Tour — will take place on Saturday, April 26, in the downtown area. Roads in Federal Heights, the University of Utah campus, Sugar House, and Holladay will also be affected.
The Salt Lake City Police Department is warning residents to “expect significant delays” and plan extra time for travel or commuting.
Some streets will be shut down as early as midnight on the day of the marathon, with the last roads opening back up at 5 p.m. The majority of the affected roads will be closed between 5 a.m. and 2 p.m.
“Although the SLCPD works closely with event organizers to lessen any impact on our community, we expect that there will be disruptions to normal traffic, including access to homes and businesses along the race route,” the SLCPD said in a press release.

SLCPD said major intersections will remain open for traffic “as crowds allow,” and access to the hospital will be available. Officers will be placed throughout the course to help with traffic and respond to any potential emergency, the release said.
“Runners and spectators are reminded to stay aware of their surroundings, follow all posted signs and instructions from public safety personnel, and report anything suspicious to an officer or race official,” the department said. “The SLCPD appreciates our community’s patience and cooperation in making this a safe and successful event.”
As driving and parking will be difficult, TRAX and FrontRunner will be available to participants for free. Additional train cars will run on Saturday with trains running every 5 to 10 minutes starting at 5 a.m., according to the marathon website.

Race organizers suggest participants who drive into Salt Lake City park downtown and take public transit to their start line location.
The start lines for the different races will be at either 102 S Wasatch Drive or 451 S 300 E. The finish line festival will be located at Library Square near 451 S 200 E with vendors and music, according to marathon officials.
While registration for the event is open until Friday at 7 p.m., marathon officials say nearly all events are close to selling out.
