Most power back after blackouts hit 100K across New Orleans, surrounding areas

NEW ORLEANS — More than 100,000 customers lost electricity during a series of rolling blackouts Sunday, but most power had been restored across New Orleans, Jefferson Parish, and the Northshore by the evening.

As Entergy worked to restore power, the utility announced that the mandatory power outages for Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans have ended.

MISO, the group that manages the electric grid, canceled its order for power outages in Entergy Louisiana and New Orleans. Power is back on for most customers. The outages were done to prevent a bigger, longer blackout and keep the grid stable, representatives said.

City leaders said New Orleans took the hardest hit in what they said was a sudden, forced outage ordered by MISO with little warning. They’re demanding answers about the lack of notice and poor communication.

At one point the map showed 102, 771 customers were affected.

The power outage started around 4:30 p.m. The outage impacts the Eastbank of New Orleans and parts of Metairie.

An outage was also reported in St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parish. The map showed 6,800 customers without electricity in St. Bernard at one point.

Entergy said the outage was caused by a “load shed”, which is when the power grid is close to capacity. So the grid operator told Entergy to shut part of it down for a time so it doesn’t overload. The company said it does not have an estimated time for restoration at the moment.

“Entergy New Orleans is currently subject to a load-shed order from MISO; approximately 52,000 customers are impacted,” an Entergy Representative said. “Our crews will work as quickly and safely as possible to restore service, as soon as we are clear to do so. Estimated time of restoration is unclear at this time, pending further updates from MISO.”

Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans began rolling outages Sunday under orders from their grid operator, MISO, to prevent a larger, long-term blackout, a released issued by Entergy stated. The emergency measure was triggered by a power shortfall threatening the reliability of the electric grid.

Customers may experience multiple outages until conditions improve and MISO gives the all-clear. Entergy urges customers to stay informed through its app, website, and local news updates.

Power was expected to be restored between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., according to the map.

As of 11 p.m. Sunday, the map showed 3,357 still impacted, here are the outages:

  • 41 customers without power: At one point : 52,268
  • 2,275 customers without power: At one point, 36, 204
  • 232 customers without power: At one point 6, 535

According to Entergy, this is a load shed event as directed by MISO. That means it is intentional. The question is why? https://t.co/FbF0PJv2sZ

I’ve talked with MISO. A generator was planned to be out for maintenance. However, a generator tripped and there wasn’t enough energy to meet the demand. But, I’m told it’s contained and coming online. But why was the forecasting off? https://t.co/pohI2WVfWB
