Mother falls to her death while hiking with children at Purgatory Chasm

(WJAR) — The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office on Thursday identified the woman who fell to her death Wednesday at Purgatory Chasm in Sutton while hiking with family.

According to officials, the hiker was identified as Carolyn Sanger, 49, of Topsfield.

Massachusetts State Police said troopers responded at about 2 p.m. on Wednesday to reports that someone had fallen about 50 to 75 feet into the chasm.

Officials said Sanger, who had been hiking with her four children, was pronounced dead at the scene.

First responders from various agencies were working to recover her body on Wednesday.

“We offer our condolences to the family and loved ones of the decedent,” state police said.

Purgatory Chasm State Reservation is a state park noted for a quarter-mile-long, 70-foot deep gorge. The park is popular with hikers and rock climbers.
