Niners trade WR Deebo Samuel to Commanders for fifth-round pick

Samuel was a Swiss Army Knife for the 49ers under head coach Kyle Shanahan. Per NFL Research, Samuel is the only wide receiver in NFL history with 20-plus career rush touchdowns and 20-plus career receiving TDs.

The veteran asked for a trade in 2022, after earning Pro Bowl and All-Pro nods in 2021, but he and the team eventually worked out a contract extension. Last offseason, Samuel and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk were linked to trade rumors. This offseason, the team decided to give Samuel a chance to head elsewhere.

Samuel, 29, played in 15 games in 2024 and had just 51 receptions, his low mark of any season with 13-plus appearances. He recorded 670 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns, plus 42 rush attempts for 136 yards and a score.

Might the team next lock quarterback Brock Purdy in on a long-term deal? Niners general manager John Lynch told reporters at the combine that negotiations have started.

As for Washington, reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels will get to throw to an accomplished offensive weapon. Samuel is one of four players in NFL history with 4,000-plus receiving yards and 1,000-plus rush yards through their first six career seasons, per NFL Research.
