Philadelphia weather: Flood warnings issued as torrential rain falls across region

PHILADELPHIA – The threat of severe weather looms large Friday night, as a system expected to bring drenching rain could also bring some tornadic activity.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Philadelphia and the suburbs in Pennsylvania and New Jersey beginning at 7 p.m. A Tornado Watch was issued for the Delaware Valley until midnight. Additionally, a Flash Flood Warning has been issued for portions of Chester and Delaware counties and Gloucester and Salem counties until 3:15 Saturday morning, as torrential rainfall has entered the region.

Sunday is expected to be the gem of the weekend, with plenty of sunshine and highs in the 70s.

What we know:

Forecasters are bracing for severe weather that could dump as much as three inches of rain in some places. The threat for tornadoes also exists.

The National Weather Service issued a Flood Warning for Philadelphia and its suburbs that starts at 7 p.m. and lasts until Saturday morning. In addition, a Tornadao Watch was issued for all of South Jersey, all of Delaware and Philadelphia and the surrounding counties until midnight.

Forecasters say rain rates at times could be greater than an inch an hour, with very heavy rainfall expected sometime after 9 or 10 p.m.

The greatest risk of tornadoes falls between 8 p.m. and midnight, mainly for portions of Delaware and parts of South Jersey.

Saturday will see relatively calm conditions throughout the morning, but storms could bubble up somewhere between 2 and 3 p.m. for portions of the area and storms are possible between 3 and 8 p.m.

The weather will take a turn for the better on Sunday with plenty of sunshine and comfortable highs in the 70s.
