The Pittsburgh Steelers could trade up for a quarterback on day two of the NFL Draft. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Steelers have eyed a quarterback on Day 2 that they could target in the 2025 NFL Draft.
“Tyler Shough, Jaxson Dart, those names would be in consideration,” Rapoport said. “If they pass on Shedeur, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them take a small leap up tomorrow night, maybe get one of those quarterbacks.”
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan were not there for Dart’s pro day in Oxford, so this is the first interaction the two will have. The team sent Assistant General Manager Andy Weidl, Scout Ike Taylor, and Wide Receivers Coach Zach Azzanni.
Shough came in for a pre-draft visit in March and has been one of the players they were interested in early in the process. They saw both Dart and Shough at the Senior Bowl.
All in all, the Steelers have shown significant interest in 11 quarterbacks throughout the process in their hunt for a quarterback. Head coach Mike Tomlin has noted the process for quarterbacks is different.
“Certainly, each positional meeting, football or schematic meeting, is different based on the position. And so quarterback has his own structure, if you will. They’re oftentimes defined by situational football, and so we look at a lot of their situational football, their ability to manage possession downs, red zone, two-minute. I think if you really want to get to know someone, as opposed to talking about what it is that you do, you watch their tape and talk about what it is they’ve done. I think that’s a platform for a more productive day than simply instructing them about how we do business in Pittsburgh. And so that’s just a little window in terms of our mindset, in terms of how we interact with all the quarterbacks. It’s about their tape. It’s about their experiences, because it aids us in our ability to get to know them as players and as people,” Tomlin said.
The Steelers are almost sure to take a quarterback at some point in the NFL Draft, but whether that happens in the first round or another part of the class remains to be seen.
