Time to sign off with David Hytner’s verdict from Eindhoven. Thanks for joining me. Bye!

And now Mikel Arteta: “So happy for the boys, after not scoring and all the noise around them. I sent them out [in the second half] to score a fourth goal, then the game will be over. Momentum can shift, and you don’t want to put yourself in that position.”

On Lewis-Skelly, he said he “didn’t see the second [foul], but I couldn’t take a risk away from home. He’s very young, and we need to protect him.” Did he see tonight’s result coming? “No, but this is the beauty of football. This is a competition we love … it’s a special night for us.”

He also points out that two full-backs – Timber and Calafiori – scored from open play. “This is the kind of team I want to manage!”

Here’s Martin Ødegaard, Uefa’s official player of the match: “We conceded one goal, but apart from that it was a top performance. We worked hard to improve, we wanted to be better after [losing to] West Ham. Today it clicked, we had a little extra focus … when we play on this level it’s really fun to play.”

Would he like to go back to Real Madrid next? “It would be fun, but we’re happy whoever we play,” he says, before quickly adding “once we get the job done at home, of course.” He then gets his official Uefa bauble from Daniel Sturridge to complete an exceptional evening.

In tonight’s other tie, Lille earned a 1-1 draw at Dortmund, Hakon Haraldsson’s second-half equaliser putting the Ligue 1 side in the box seat before the second leg.

Share

Declan Rice: “We were fluid, we had enthusiasm, hunger … we feel we’ve been playing well all season but sometimes we win by six, sometimes by one or two, sometimes we lose by one.” He’s also full of praise for Ethan Nwaneri – “17 years old, shining on the biggest stage there is in football.”

Jurriën Timber is happy with “an amazing win” that “puts us in a good position for the second leg.” All a bit sensible for my liking, but he does ask what the score was between Real and Atlético.

Assuming that Arsenal avoid a seven-goal swing back at the Emirates, will it be Real or Atlético Madrid next? Well, Real have won the first leg 2-1, but the tie is very much alive.

This was supposed to be close – instead, it ends as an evisceration of historic proportions. Arsenal are the first team to score seven away goals in a Champions League knockout stage, and can already start planning for a quarter-final against Real or Atlético Madrid.

PSV were a shambles in defence, particularly in the second half, but Arsenal punished them ruthlessly. Declan Rice was everywhere, Ethan Nwaneri was excellent but Martin Odegaard ran the show, taking the opposition apart at will. Next up: Man Utd (A).

90 mins: Two added minutes.

Share

89 mins: David Raya loses the ball a long way from his goal but PSV, now utterly shell-shocked from front to back, don’t make anything of the opportunity.

Share

It’s a magnificent seven for Arsenal, created by the wizardry of Odegaard, who carves open PSV with the outside of his foot. Ricardo Calafiori runs onto the pass, and effortlessly rolls the ball beyond Benitez and in off the far post. That’s their left back! What a finish.

Share

84 mins: Rice sends a corner beyond the far post to Zinchenko, who can’t quite connect with his volley. The Ukrainian then tries to play in Sterling, who would love a goal – but his pass is cut out.

Share

82 mins: Two more PSV changes – Boscagli, who’s had a rough night, is replaced by Armando Obispo. Also coming on is Joey Veerman, replacing Saibari, who pretty much disappeared after hitting the bar early on.

Share

81 mins: Arsenal keep the ball and it ends up with Zinchenko, playing in an attacking role. He chests down and volleys across goal, and only a fine fingertip save from Benitez stops a seventh for Arsenal.

Share

79 mins: But it’s cleared and Arsenal break, Odegaard’s overhit through ball still eventually getting to Sterling, who is denied by a well-timed Perisic challenge.

Share

78 mins: The PSV fans who didn’t bolt for the exits after Odegaard’s goal are chanting again, trying to inspire their team to rescue some pride. A probing run from Bakayoko wins a corner …

Share

77 mins: PSV are almost undone again as a loose backpass falls to Tierney, whose cross doesn’t find a black shirt. It’s strange to recall that the hosts were very much in this game at half-time.

Share

75 mins: More changes for Arsenal, with Kieran Tierney and Ben White on for Mikel Merino and the booked goalscorer Timber.

Share

Martin Odegaard, who has had this game on his left boot pretty much throughout, runs at PSV’s papier mache defence and fires a shot at goal. It’s central but fiercely struck, and Benitez can only palm it into the far corner. It’s SIX for Arsenal!

Share

71 mins: Two Arsenal changes, with Oleksandr Zinchenko and Raheem Sterling on for Partey and the excellent Nwaneri. Zinchenko spent a season here on loan while he was on Manchester City’s books.

Share

NO GOAL! A PSV clearance rebounds off Calafiori and into the path of Trossard, who is miles offside, but goes round Benitez and strokes the ball in before the flag is inevitably raised.

Share

68 mins: Timber is booked, somewhat harshly, for time wasting. We’re going to see some Arsenal changes shortly, I would wager.

Share

67 mins: Arsenal seem quite content to let PSV try and break them down, and Saliba takes the ball from Perisic on the touchline with almost contemptous ease.

Share

65 mins: Two more PSV changes – sprightly winger Johan Bakayoko and full-back Rick Karsdorp replace Richard Ledezma and Luuk De Jong.

Share

64 mins: PSV keep pressing and probing, but Lang’s attempted through ball is cut out by Calafiori, to audible groans from the home fans. Carnival very much over at this point.

Share

62 mins: After half-hearted appeals from PSV for handball, Malacia sends in a cross that has Raya worried, but flies wide of the far post.

Share

60 mins: Rice whips the corner to the far post, where Gabriel comes crashing in – but his downward header ends up bouncing wide.

Share

59 mins: Nwaneri continues to menace the PSV defence, collecting Odegaard’s pass and firing a shot which Boscagli heads over the bar …

Share

In a game featuring a pitiful three goals so far, Real Madrid have retaken the lead against Atlético. Brahim Diaz has made it 2-1 on a big night for former Manchester City players.

Share

55 mins: Trossard sees a shot charged down from the edge of the area, then gets back to strip the ball from Lang at the other end. “Subbed at half-time? Flamingo won’t be tickled pink about that,” honks Andrew Clarke. After Arsenal’s third goal, he didn’t have a leg to stand on.

Share

54 mins: PSV continue to be a shambles at the back, and Nwaneri has time and space to cut inside and leather a shot at Benitez, who palms it away to relative safety.

Share

53 mins: From the corner, the ball is worked to Perisic, whose swirling far-post cross is headed on to the post by De Jong!

Share

51 mins: PSV aren’t giving up – not going forward, anyway – and Perisic forces Raya to turn the ball over for a corner …

“The sunshine has faded, the clouds have regathered and technicolour has turned to black-and-white. Martin Odegaard is revealed to be having a pretty dismal game. Thomas Partey is odds on for a second yellow. The fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse is just coming through gate three in the east stand. I look forward to a further bulletin once Arsenal are 5-1 up.”

Charles Antaki, are you from the future?

Peter Bosz has his head in his hands, and those PSV fans not heading for the exits are whistling furiously. They’ve been absolutely torn apart, and it feels like a case of how many Arsenal want to score.

Share

Good gracious. Arsenal have another, and it’s a beauty – Trossard backheeling to Calafiori, who then slips the ball in behind for the Belgian to scoop a lovely finish over Benitez!

Share

It’s the perfect start to the second half for Arsenal! Ethan Nwaneri is the creator, getting beyond Malacia and sweeping in a dangerous cross that Benitez can only palm out to Martin Odegaard, who does the rest.

PSV make a half-time change, with Adamo Nagalo replacing Ryan Flamingo at centre-back in a big blow for pun-loving MBMers.

Share

With his goal, Ethan Nwaneri (17yr 348d) becomes the third-youngest goal scorer in the Champions League knockout stage – behind only Bojan (17y 217d) and Jude Bellingham (17y 289d).

Share

Something I kept meaning to point out amid the flurry of chances – Declan Rice mentioned before the game that Mikel Arteta wants his players to be more flexible in terms of their playing position.

We’ve certainly seen that from Rice in the first half – he’s been very attacking – and defenders are getting forward in open play, as seen when right-back Timber nodded home Rice’s cross for the opener.

That is presumably to ease the burden on “false nine” Mikel Merino, although he got Arsenal’s third with the poaching instincts of big Micky Quinn in his pomp.

Share

“Suddenly, everything in Arsenal–world looks fine, fine, fine. Clouds part. Sunshine streams down. The power of love, or more specifically, three terrific goals,” wrote Charles Antaki, seconds before PSV won that corner.

Share

Half time in Madrid, where the red-hot Julian Alvarez has got Atlético level at the Bernabéu. It’s 1-1 there, and Dortmund lead Lille 1-0 at home thanks to Karim Adeyemi.

It’s Carnival time in Eindhoven and this game has brought the requisite vibes. There have been chances at both ends, great goals, controversy and defensive clownery galore. More please!

Share

47 mins: Perisic crumples into Gabriel underneath a long ball from Flamingo, and is ordered to his feet by the referee.

Share

45 mins: Another chance for PSV! Malacia, who’s here on loan from Manchester United, whips in a terrific cross on to the head of Luuk De Jong, who nods it over the bar. Four added minutes, and no sign of this game slowing down.

Share

43 mins: Arsenal are immediately back on the front foot with Declan Rice – who has spent much of the game playing almost as a left winger – firing a low shot towards the far corner which Benitez gets his fingertips to. Nobody notices, though, and PSV get a goal kick.

Share

Crank up the Kernkraft, PSV are back in this. Noa Lang, taking over spot-kick duties from De Jong, smacks the ball into the corner with David Raya not making a move either way.

And as the ball floats towards goal, Thomas Partey is penalised for hauling down Luuk De Jong! He also gets a (first) yellow card.

Share

40 mins: PSV, trying to regain a foothold in this tie, have a corner …

Share

“Did I just hear Clattenberg say that had Lewis-Skelly not been booked then that tackle would have been a booking – but as he had been booked already that tackle wasn’t worthy of a second yellow card?” asks Ian Sergeant. “When did that become a thing?”

Yes, he definitely seemed to be saying that. I guess it’s inevitable that referees will weigh up second yellow cards differently, but it’s not in the laws of the game. Maybe stick to Gladiators, Clatts.

Share

35 mins: We resume after that long VAR check, but Lewis-Skelly’s night is over – he’s replaced by Ricardo Calafiori. He set up a lovely second goal, but is basically being taken off to avoid a red card – a mixed night, you might say.

Share

The goal stands, and Arsenal – who could have gone a goal and/or a man down – are threatening to run away with the tie completely.

Onderzoek Doelpunt. That’s the Dutch for ‘Goal Check’, plastered on every screen as we await a verdict.

Share

30 mins: GOAL? Arsenal strike again, this time profiting from a defensive disaster class as PSV repeatedly fail to clear the ball, Flamingo topples over as if perched on a single leg, and Mikel Merino pounces to roll the ball into the net. But wait – there’s a VAR check for offside.
