COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Red Robin is considering closing 70 underperforming locations across the country, leaving the door open for Ohio restaurants to shut down.
In the restaurant chain’s quarterly earnings report, Red Robin executives said they are “evaluating alternatives for approximately 70 underperforming restaurant locations” upon the expiration of their current leases.
The chain shuttered one restaurant following a lease expiration in the fourth quarter of 2024. The company stated the anticipated closures will help repay debt and provide money that can be reinvested in the brand.
In 2024, Red Robin’s total revenue sat at $1.25 billion, down by $54.5 million compared with the previous fiscal year. The company reported a net loss of $77.5 million in 2024 and a net loss of $21.2 million in 2023.
“While financial results for 2024 fell well below our original expectations, we’ve made substantial improvements to the guest experience and believe we still have a significant opportunity ahead of us to reach the full potential of our iconic brand,” said G.J. Hart, president and CEO.
While Red Robin executives did not share what specific restaurants may close, they did share an expected timeline. Most of the underperforming locations are expected to close over the next five years as their leases expire, and the company is anticipating the closure of 10 to 15 restaurants this year, according to Hart.
