Mike Garafolo of NFL Network later reported the Pats had also agreed to a deal with tackle Morgan Moses. The three early moves help solidify three big areas of need that the Patriots had entering the free agency period.
Spillane, formerly with the Las Vegas Raiders, has reportedly agreed to a three-year, $37.5 million contract with the Pats. He should provide a valuable presence as an off-the-ball linebacker, a position thinned by injuries in 2024. Spillane blossomed over the last two seasons in Las Vegas into one of the most productive linebackers in the NFL.
In 2024, he amassed 158 total tackles, including 76 solo tackles, ranking him seventh among linebackers. He also recorded 10 tackles for loss, showcasing his ability to play behind the line of scrimmage in opponent’s backfields.
Pro Football Focus graded Spillane’s 2024 performance with an overall grade of 82.3, placing him fourth out of 189 linebackers. His tackling proficiency and run defense are strengths in his game and should make him a valuable asset alongside veteran captain Ja’Whaun Bentley, who missed nearly all of 2024.
While Spillane adds an instant boost to the front seven and second level of the defense, Carlton Davis III, previously with the Detroit Lions, is another strategic addition, but to the back end of the Patriots’ defense. His coverage skills and physical playstyle have been consistent, contributing to his reputation as a reliable cornerback. His size and experience should help Davis serve as an excellent complement across from rising star Christian Gonzalez.
PFF assigned Davis an overall grade of 74.5 for the 2024 season, ranking him 29th out of 223 cornerbacks. His ability to match up against top receivers and versatility in various coverage schemes make him a good fit for New England’s secondary as an outside cornerback no matter what scheme they run.
Under Vrabel and new defensive coordinator Terrell Williams, both Spillane and Davis should be expected to play significant roles alongside Harold Landry, a reported re-signing made on Sunday evening before free agency opened.
