Southampton have made unwanted history as the first team relegated from the Premier League with seven games still to play after a 3-1 defeat at Tottenham.
Two goals from Brennan Johnson were enough to give Spurs their first win in five in the league, consigning their rock-bottom opponents to a 25th loss of the season and a swift return to the Championship. Mateus Fernandes scored a late consolation for the visitors but it was not enough for Saints to take anything from the game, as Mathys Tel rounded off Spurs’ win with a stoppage-time penalty.
While Southampton, with 10 points to their name, can still avoid finishing the campaign with a record-low points total, no side has gone down with seven games remaining. Derby County famously finished bottom with 11 points in 2008, but they had six games left to play when their relegation was confirmed.
