Alberto Puello vs. Sandor Martin
Walkouts: Puello is in black and gold, Martin in red and black. They get final instructions and we’re off.
Round 1: Both men out as southpaws. Martin holding the center early as both men test the waters with some jabs. Martin swings a left hand that comes up short. Both men working just a few at a time. Puello hitting the body with the lead hand. Martin backing Puello up and trying to fire the left over the top. He charges in and Puello lands a nice hook inside as they both start swinging. Spurts of action. Martin explodes in after pressuring Puello to the corner but neither man lands clean. Good bits of action in there but neither man landed too much.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Martin.
Round 2: Martin back to pressure. Puello is giving ground freely, perhaps trying to bait Martin in. He’s not biting yet though. Both men establishing the jab and then Martin digs hooks to the body as things get hot on the inside. Puello backing Martin up now. Puello really putting the jab in Martin’s face now, doubles, levels, mixing it up with the lead hand. Martin finds his way inside and chops the body. Then they exchange in space. High output here from both men, but neither getting major damage in yet.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Puello, 19-19 overall.
Round 3: Puello tells his corner he’s having trouble seeing, “seeing double” from a punch to the eye. We’ll see how that goes for him.
Puello pressing in now and Martin sits down on some counters to back him up but Puello sees it coming. Both men swinging more power shots now. Things are close in there. Puello starting to dictate things a bit but Martin is taking his chances to land heavy. And when Puello covers up, Martin digs to the body. But Puello counters! Big counter for Puello and Martin takes it but clean shot. Roughhousing inside gets broken up. Hard collision before the end of the round.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Puello, 29-28 Puello overall.
Round 4: Martin back on the pressure this round and digs a nice straight left to the body early. Then a left up top and another. Puello trying to counter this round and Martin is putting leather on him right now as a result. Jabs on both sides and Martin cracks Puello with a left behind it. Then a body shot as Puello turns and goes up top. Now Puello moving forward. 30 seconds left and they stand and trade inside with both men landing. Another collision before the round ends.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Martin, 38-38 overall.
Round 5: Both men meeting in the middle early this round. Martin doing a great job of continuing to work the body. When they’re inside, he’s landing good shots. Martin now drawing Puello onto counters, walking him in and then picking him off. Puello moving away from his jab and struggling to land good offense at range now. Martin hits the body again. Puello trying to find a way to get something going but Martin is making it tough on him while moving backwards. Martin is slowing his offense though, so that’s something. Another exchange with neither man landing much.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Martin, 48-47 Martin overall.
Round 6: Renewed vigor in this round as Martin sits down on some hooks early. Puello covers up but Martin is sending a message. Puello on the advance still as Martin keeps moving him around by the nose. And when they get inside, Martin is winning. He’s digging the body and Puello can’t find his uppercut. But Puello is letting go more now. BIG right hook lands for Puello but Martin eats it. This has turned into a hard-nosed fight in the phone booth. So Martin backs out to space and starts popping his jab. Puello gives him the same and a left up top lands. Martin pounds the body as they get inside again.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Martin 58-56 Martin overall.
Round 7: Right to the inside this round and Martin fires hooks to the body. He is getting vicious when they are head to head. Puello gets to space and starts firing the jab. Puello can’t get Martin off him inside and can’t land big on the outside as Martin digs the body again. Puello still trying with his jab but Martin meeting him where he’s to. Puello starting to get the double jab home but now he needs power shots as Martin punishes the body again inside. And again. Puello back to his double jab. He needs that left hand to start doing something. Clinch. Puello finally lets the left go but comes up short. Right does land clean for Puello at the end though. Maybe that’s enough to steal it.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Puello, 67-66 Martin overall.
Round 8: Puello comes across the ring and immediately sits down on two nice shots. That seems to anger Martin who now is throwing back twice as hard. Puello then gets to space and lands a 1-2. Puello’s jab is starting to get home plenty now. Still has no answer for Martin’s body work though. Inside, more hooks and uppercuts. Martin’s offense definitely slowing a bit as he draws Puello in and then digs the body. Hooks from both sides as they lean on each other. Nasty in-fighting here. Martin’s out-working Puello inside still. More punches, better defense, hurt the body.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Martin, 77-75 Martin overall.
Round 9: Both men are gonna hate tomorrow, Puello especially. Ribs have to be toast as they go right back to work chopping away at each other inside. Martin landing more though. Yeesh. Both men are content to lean on each other and pound away. This looks like it sucks to be a part of. Whap. Whap. Whap whap. Two dudes hitting slabs of meat like a Rocky movie. Nice left hook up top from Martin. Puello slipping but Martin got one home as they keep this rock fight going.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Martin, 87-84 overall.
Round 10: At this point I’ll note that the scorecards could be all over the place. Every round has felt competitive.
And the come out and hit each other some more. Puello with a nice uppercut inside that snaps Martin’s head up. They keep pounding (Go Panthers). Martins has decided he doesn’t ever need to not be in contact with Puello and Puello is happy to oblige.
“Let’s put our shoulders on each other and have the most grueling fight possible”
“Bet.”
They finally go to space to change things up and both men immediately whiff. They’re not use to all this air anymore. So they get back inside and start chopping. Martin lands like 6 to the body and Puello counters with a clean left hook up top.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Martin, 97-93 Martin overall.
Round 11: Clinch to start. These men want it. They yearn for the clinch. Both men clearly need a hug. They crave the contact of another person — only they then realize what that means to violently punch their would-be friend. Whack.
OH! They get to space and Puello lands a NASTY body shot as Martin ducks. Sends a jolt through him and Martin now working through it as Puello made him take one there. Now Puello going to the jab as Martin backs up and pulls Puello in. Martin losing some power now on those punches. Puello may have the advantage but can he press it? He’s in space now and jabbing away. Martin showing good defense as he’s punting on this round it appears.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Puello, 106-103 Martin overall.
Round 12: Final round and both men come out chucking. All to play for here, neither can feel comfortable. And Puello is the advancing party. Good right hook from Martin. And a left, catches Puello coming in. This is the first round that’s being contested almost entirely at range, so that’s different. Puello gets Martin against the corner and Martin rips an uppercut. Range and exchanges. 60 seconds and both men need to make a statement. This round is up for grabs. Puello pulling away with work thus far. Martin’s offense is down and he’s got a cut. They get inside and Puello is the one bullying now. Swings and misses to end the fight and we head to the judges.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Puello, 115-113 Martin overall.
Official Decision: Alberto Puello def. Sandor Martin via split decision (115-113, 113-115, 116-112).
Jose Valenzuela vs. Gary Antuanne Russell
Walkouts: Valenzuela is white and green, Russell in gold and white.
Round 1: Both men out in southpaw and Russell comes right across the ring, putting the pressure on Valenzuela. Russell very active with the jab and he’s showing that hand speed off early. Valenzuela defending and feeling things out as Russell is snapping the jab continuously. He’s putting a lot of volume down. Both men trade hooks to the body and then Valenzuela lands a nice counter as Russell keeps pressuring. But Russell puts gloves on him, many of them. He’s putting so much volume down. Can he do this for 12 rounds? Will he have to? Valenzuela needs to get respect as Russell lands a jumping left.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Russell.
Round 2: Russell right back to work and lands a right hook. He’s not allowing Valenzuela to get comfortable. Good left over the top behind his jab for Russell as he steps through with it. Body to head for Russell as Valenzuela lands a left of his own. Valenzuela spins Russell to the ropes and hits the body. He’s getting out-worked though. Russell is so fast and active. He gets Valenzuela to the corner again and mixes a nice combination all over the place. Russell keeps poking with the jab. So many of them. Then a left hand. Now he digs combos to the body.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Russell, 20-18 Russell overall.
Round 3: Can Russell keep up this output? He’s certainly going to try. Right back to the pressure. Valenzuela backed into the corner and Russell lands the body shot. Snapping left hand at range. His speed is an advantage, clearly. And he’s putting so much out there that Valenzuela is getting paralyzed by activity. Valenzuela lands a decent left but Russell keeps going. The punch stats are wild. Russel is basically doubling Valenzuela up, over 200 thrown through 2.5 rounds. And he keeps coming. Every punch has a friend or six with it. Valenzuela is throwing one at a time and then getting caught in the avalanche. Valenzuela now puts Russell in the corner but Russell is the one who lands and backs Valenzuela off.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Russell, 30-27 Russell overall.
Round 4: Same story as before. Russell keeps doing what’s working. Valenzuela trying to get him off him with power shots now. Lands a good counter but it’s only a slight reprieve. He’s fighting back better this round though. Making himself felt for the first time this round but holding his ground in the middle. Russell to the body. Valenzuela showing better defense now as Russell’s offense is slowing slightly. He’s still aggressive but no longer machine-gunning punches in. And Valenzuela now lands some good counters! He caught Russell in the middle distance and that might be the first Valenzuela round? Or maybe I’m just caught up because it’s the first round he wasn’t clearly whooped.
MMA Fighting scores the round Russell, 40-36 Russell overall.
Round 5: If Russell slows down just a little bit, Valenzuela can make this a fight. But Russell is back on the gas this round. He is marching Valenzuela back and throwing in combination, to both levels. Ooo, good sequence for Valenzuela as he lands a combo inside. But Russell gives it right back. And then gets Valenzuela to the ropes and lands two more. He is simply landing far more frequently. Valenzuela lands a reaching left. Russell spins him to the ropes. 4-punch combo, now 5. Russell keeps the party going as he gets Valenzuela to the ropes and swings away. Valenzuela defends over half of these but has no return fire and Russell keeps scoring. This is like that old quote about Harry Greb and feeling like you’re fighting in a glove factory. Russell is filling the air with his hands.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Russell, 50-45 Russell overall.
Round 6: Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Russell is throwing a billion punches. Valenzuela has completely failed to back Russell off and so he keeps coming, punching, punching, punching. Russell clearly believes in fire superiority as he is not letting up for an instant. Valenzuela lands a sharp left that bloodies his nose and Russell keeps coming. Valenzuela is still boxing but he’s not competing, if that makes sense. He’s landing his shots and not quitting, but he’s not doing anything to change the dynamic.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Russell, 60-54 Russell overall.
Round 7: Valenzuela opening up his offense to start this round and that’s exactly what he needs. Sure, it’s a risk, but nothing ventured, nothing gained. Valenzuela is not winning this fight unless he lowers the boom because Russell keeps going. More pressure, more punches. Valenzuela receding back to his standard now. Russell chewing Valenzuela up now, hitting where Valenzuela isn’t defending. And any time Valenzuela lands, Russell gets it right back. Absolutely no room to breath for Valenzuela and he starts playing more defense as Russell has him against the ropes and he unloads. OH! Russell landing big shots against the ropes now! Valenzuela may be wilting finally as he rolls and slips but doesn’t have meaningful offense to return fire with.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Russell, 70-63 Russell overall.
Round 8: Russell has thrown 500+ punches and landed over 130. That’s a lot. And he ain’t stopping anytime soon. Valenzuela tries to sit on a counter but instead eats a good left from Russell. And Russell keeps that volume coming. Valenzuela is playing so much defense now. His output seems like it’s dropping off as he’s more concerned with not getting punches a billion times. Russell lands to the body. He keeps punching. Valenzuela tries to punch back but he’s a kite dancing in a hurricane right now and eats a pair of big left hands. And another. Valenzuela gets ripped to the body. When Valenzuela does open up, Russell really cracks him. This is a landslide.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Russell, 80-72 Russell overall.
Round 9: More of the same. Getting hard to find new ways to write “Russell punches a lot and Valenzuela eats a lot of them. Valenzuela tries to fire back and Russell punishes him. Valenzuela’s face starting to get busted up. He landed one punch and Russell landed 3 more. That has to suck. And Valenzuela looks like he’s having a bad time in there. Credit to him, he keeps trying. But whenever he tries he gets the crap beat out of him. Russell pouring big shots on now! He’s got Valenzuela against the ropes and he is wailing on Valenzuela. But Valenzuela works through it and makes it out.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Russell, 90-81 Russell overall.
Round 10: We got a brief doctor check on Valenzuela’s eye but he’s good to go. Definitely a little worse for wear now though. And Russell keeps coming. Actually, that’s a lie, Russell is throwing harder now. He’s putting some real zip behind them. He wants to get a stoppage. Valenzuela isn’t going away though, gotta respect it. And Russell keeps working. Valenzuela isn’t throwing much. now though, perhaps because when he does he gets beat like a yard dog. And Russell now trying a different tactic, drawing Valenzuela in. And it works and Valenzuela eats a left hand.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Russell, 100-90 Russell overall.
Round 11: Same same. Nothing new to report. Russell keeps punching a lot and landing a good amount. Valenzuela showing his toughness. Rinse, repeat. OH!!!!! Good lord, Russell landed a PURE right hook and Valenzuela ate that somehow. Russell wants this finish but Valenzuela got a chin on him. Snapped his head all the way around and Valenzuela didn’t even buckle. Valenzuela tries to get back and Russell hits him. Remind me not to fight Mr. Russell in the future. Seems uncomfortable.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Russell, 110-99 Russell overall.
Round 12: I mean, this has been true for a while now, but Valenzuela needs a miracle, and Russell’s corner is telling him that. “Hail Mary is all he has.” That is correct as the doctor checks Valenzuela again. But they restart.
Russell back to business. Nothing new to tell, same things happening. Russell is trying to kill this poor man slow and Valenzuela is too tough to die. Russell bludgeoning him. Valenzuela lands a punch and then Russell assaults him. Someone lost a mouthpiece. I’m guessing Valenzuela. Teeth are going bye bye. Russell trying to kill Valenzuela at the end and swings away and Valenzuela digs in himself. Incredible performance from Russell.
MMA Fighting scores the round 10-9 Russell, 120-108 Russell overall.
Official Decision: Gary Antuanne Russell def. Jose Valenzuela via unanimous decision (119-109, 119-109, 120-108)
