Political statements have gotten scant spotlight at the Oscars so far.
There were passing references to Ukraine amid the country’s cratering relationship with the Trump administration. “Conclave” screenwriter Peter Straughan wore a broach emblazoned with the colors of Ukraine’s flag, and actress Daryl Hannah declared “Slava Ukraine!” before presenting the Oscar for editing.
The most explicit political statement of the night came after the award for best documentary went to “No Other Land,” directed by a collective of Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers. The film follows the friendship between Palestinian activist Basel Adra and Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham.
