Thunderstorms could arrive in San Antonio within hours

Strong storms are just hours away from San Antonio bringing some low-level risk of large hail or damaging wind gusts. Threats escalate as you move north (or west) up I-10, but we’ve been told San Antonio would miss the worst of it before only to see the city pummeled with balls of ice.

The storms are moving across the Rio Grande this afternoon and slated to hit the greater San Antonio area by late afternoon Tuesday, April 22, and well into the evening. It’s the start of what will ultimately be a gloomy week of thunderstorms and cloudy skies over San Antonio for the rest of the week.

“A few coastal showers and storms are possibly mainly this evening,” the National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio office warned Tuesday afternoon. “A cluster of strong to severe storms are expected this evening near the Rio Grande with more isolated activity expected to spread east toward I-35 later tonight.”

There’s currently a 30% chance of rain in San Antonio Tuesday afternoon through the evening. While the national forecaster says large hail and strong winds threats are more likely northwest of San Antonio tonight, it may be wise to take advantage of any covered parking available. Forecasts are fickle, and there have been unexpected citywide hail events recently.

Back on March 31 – just a few weeks ago – virtually all of San Antonio was hammered with hail despite earlier forecasts that day saying ice should remain north and west of the city.

“It was the first time I was driving in hail. Sounded like someone was shooting the car. And, alas, there is damage,” one user commented in the thread after the March 31 hail event.

CPS Energy is also preparing for the storm event. In an email sent to customers, the utility giant said they will be monitoring any possible outages.

“We are prepared for showers and possible thunderstorms starting Tuesday afternoon and continuing throughout the week. These storms could be locally heavy, leading to the possibility of hail and gusty winds,” CPS Energy said.
