WASHINGTON (TNND) — White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday told reporters President Donald Trump would soon announce a new round of tariffs targeting the auto industry.
“The president will hold a press conference in the oval office today at 4:00 p.m. to announce tariffs on the auto industry,” she said during a press briefing. “I will leave that to him to make that announcement later.”
The move comes ahead of April 2nd, which Trump has dubbed “Liberation Day.” On that day, Trump said he plans to roll out reciprocal tariffs to equal out trade imbalances between the U.S. and other foreign nations.
“For DECADES we have been ripped off and abused by every nation in the World, both friend and foe,” Trump wrote via Truth Social. “Now it is finally time for the Good Ol’ USA to get some of that MONEY, and RESPECT, BACK.”
Car manufacturer Hyundai this week promised ahead of the tariffs it would invest $21 billion in the United States over the next four years. The company plans to begin by building a $5.8 billion steel plant in Louisiana.
