Updated Commanders 2025 NFL Draft picks after Laremy Tunsil trade

Adam Peters is developing a flair for the extravagant. This was evident once again as the Washington Commanders pulled off a blockbuster trade for Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil.

This represents another win-now move from the Commanders. Peters knows how pivotal taking advantage of quarterback Jayden Daniels’ rookie contract is. Getting the No. 2 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft an elite-level blindside protector is one of the best ways to do just that.

Nobody should be happier about the transaction than Daniels. But inevitably, it cost the Commanders significant draft assets to get a top-level performer into the fold.

According to multiple reports, the Commanders are giving up their third-round pick and one of their seventh-rounders in 2025 — coupled with second and fourth-round selections next year — in exchange for Tunsil and a 2025 fourth-rounder. It’s another substantial commitment, but one that could help Washington counteract the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive front more effectively.

Tankathon projected the Commanders to have five picks in the 2025 NFL Draft following the move. Here’s how things stand currently.

  • Round No. 1 (Pick No. 29)
  • Round No. 2 (Pick No. 61)
  • Round No. 4 (Pick No. 127) — via Texans
  • Round No. 6 (Pick No. 207)
  • Round No. 7 (Pick No. 250) — via Eagles

That’s not exactly a king’s bounty for someone who wants to build through the draft and supplement any remaining needs in free agency. However, it’s evident that the balance has shifted sooner than expected for Peters, and he’s adjusted his strategy accordingly.

Besides, there are ways to work around it. Peters could easily trade down from No. 29 to acquire more capital. He could do the same from No. 61 if the right offer comes along. At the same time, the front-office leader could part ways with his second-round pick for Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson, although that appears unlikely looking at the current state of affairs.

Peters moves in silence. No real leaks are emanating from the Commanders these days. Everything is done with conviction, collaboration, and professionalism. While there are questions about the contract handed out to defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw, he’s earned plenty of trust from the fans.

Tunsil is a difference-maker, one of the few elite edge protectors around the league with a lot of good football left. The Commanders identified him as someone who could help them get over the hump. If the former first-round pick reaches his billing, the entire offense is going to benefit.

Building through the draft is the traditional way to do business. However, the Commanders are ready right now. That’s what makes this deal so intriguing.

And many more moves are on the way. Make no mistake about that.
