Who is Jennifer McCabe? Star witness returns to the stand in Karen Read case

Testimony in the retrial of Karen Read continues Wednesday, April 30, with Jennifer McCabe, a witness for the prosecution who the defense says searched “hos long to die in cold” on Google before John O’Keefe was found dead outside.

Read was dating O’Keefe and is charged with manslaughter, motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of a deadly crash in Canton stemming from his death on Jan. 29, 2022.

Two narratives have since emerged. The prosecution alleges that Read killed O’Keefe by backing into him with her SUV and leaving him to die after a fight. Read’s defense team argues that the police and other parties have colluded to frame Read for his murder.

Who is Jennifer McCabe?

McCabe, of Canton, is one of the prosecution’s key witnesses, as she was with the couple the night of O’Keefe’s death and was with Read when they found O’Keefe on on the lawn of 34 Fairview Road. She was also a friend of the couple.

McCabe is the sister of Nicole Albert, who is married to Brian Albert. The couple owned 34 Fairview Road and hosted an after party at their home that evening after a group of friends visited two bars.

McCabe began her testimony Tuesday with questions from the prosecution.

She testified about an early morning phone call from Read stating that O’Keefe was missing as well as discovering O’Keefe’s body in the snow after meeting up with Read to search for him.

Defense alleges Jen McCabe is part of the coverup in Karen Read trial

Richard Green, a digital forensics expert hired by the defense, testified in the first trial that a Google search for “hos long to die in cold” had been made on McCabe’s phone at 2:27 a.m., hours before O’Keefe was found on the snow-covered front lawn. The defense suggests this means McCabe knew something happened to O’Keefe and later helped frame Read.

Green will testify again in this trial.

But prosecutors say Green misinterpreted the cellphone data and those searches were made hours later, at the scene when O’Keefe was found. McCabe testified that she searched that on her phone at the urging of Read.
