9-5 – Rangers fall to Mariners 5-3 after deGrom dud

The Texas Rangers scored three runs but the Seattle Mariners scored five runs.

We might eventually have to have a talk about Jacob deGrom, who after allowing four runs on eight hits in his last outing against Tampa Bay, allowed three runs — with two dingers — while walking four and lasting just three innings. But it’s not even mid-April and he’s making his third start of the season after basically coasting through Cactus League action so now is probably not the time for that conversation.

Despite the fact that the Rangers tied the game in the sixth on a Josh Jung two-run home run, this one kind of had bad vibes from the start when Texas worked Seattle starter Bryce Miller for 30 pitches in the first inning, loaded the bases, and came away with nothing to show for it.

Two batters into the bottom of the inning, and it was 1-0 as deGrom’s outing got off on a sour note and never got much sweeter.

Eventually, the Rangers lost it late when Chris Martin gained an ERA by allowing a two-run blast to Cal Raleigh in the bottom of the eighth.

And that’s just how these games go at formerly Safeco for the Rangers and basically no other team (except, ironically, the Mariners against every other team except Texas).

Player of the Game: Jung’s home run — his second hit of the evening — got deGrom off the hook for a loss and momentarily gave the Rangers hope that they would survive a second consecutive poor outing from the former two-time Cy Young winner.

Up Next: The second game of this series will feature RHP Kumar Rocker returning to the site of where he made his MLB debut last September when he tossed four innings of one-run ball against these Mariners. Meanwhile, Seattle will counter with RHP Bryan Woo, who debuted against Texas back in 2023.

The Saturday evening first pitch from T-Mobile Park is again scheduled for 8:40 pm CT and will be aired via the Rangers Sports Network.
