Sanders became one of the names tossed around in the coaching cycle for the NFL in 2025. He even landed a meeting with the Dallas Cowboys, and revealed there were conversations between him and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

Despite the conversations, the Cowboys promoted Brian Schottenheimer instead. Regardless of that hire, Sanders to the Cowboys would have been fantastic.

Sanders is a proven winner and has turned around two programs in the NCAA. He served as the head coach of Jackson State from 2020 to 2022. During that time, he led the team to a 27-6 overall record.

Jackson State would appear in two bowl games under Sanders, losing both. Despite the losses, the success of Sanders’ time with the team led to him landing with the Buffaloes.

Sanders posted a 4-8 record in his first foray with the Buffaloes. Following his debut season in 2023, he helped to turn Colorado into a much different team in 2024.

The Buffaloes would post a 9-4 overall record, which was tied for first in the Big 12 conference. Despite making it to the 2024 Alamo Bowl, Sanders and company would lose the game.

Sanders also helped coach two of the biggest names in the upcoming NFL Draft. Two-way star Travis Hunter is being viewed as a top-five draftee, along with Shedeur Sanders, Deion Sanders’ son.

Deion is one of the hottest coaches in football, and it wouldn’t be the least bit shocking if he ends up in the NFL at some point. Though he did meet with the Cowboys, he has often stated that he has little to no desire to not coach in the NCAA.

With the mega five-year deal Sanders just landed, it appears that now rings true. For now, Sanders is going to be coaching the Buffaloes until the 2029 season and is likely to get plenty more players in the transfer portal in 2025.

Sanders is a fantastic coach, and the Colorado football program has awarded him with a massive extension due to that fact.
