ASHBURN, Va. — The Washington Commanders have made another offseason addition, this time to the most important position group on the roster.
WUSA9 has confirmed the Commanders are signing quarterback Josh Johnson to a one-year deal on Friday.
The 38-year-old quarterback will join Jayden Daniels, Marcus Mariota, and Sam Hartman on the roster in Washington in what will be his second stint with the organization.
Johnson was with the franchise in 2018 and appeared in four games while starting three of them. In those starts, he led the team to a 1-2 record, throwing for 590 yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions.
The Commanders were the fourth team in Johnson’s career that he saw active playing time with after starting his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for three seasons before playing with the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals ahead of his time in Washington.
Since leaving the organization, Johnson has spent time in the Alliance of American Football (AAF) and XFL while also playing in the NFL with the New York Jets, Baltimore Ravens, and San Francisco 49ers.
It was with the 49ers that Johnson first crossed paths with general manager Adam Peters, who he now rejoins with the Commanders.
Johnson spent last season with the Ravens, making six appearances during the course of the year and completed two of his three pass attempts producing 17 yards of offense.
Johnson originally entered the league as a fifth-round pick in the NFL Draft by the Buccaneers, after playing collegiately for the San Diego Aztecs’ program.
