Game Preview: Carolina at Boston

In recent memory, April games between the Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins had big stakes.

But tonight, these teams face off in a relatively meaningless game.

Boston is the coldest team in the NHL. The Bruins are on a 10-game losing streak, the longest active streak in the league. This stretch has dropped Boston to last in the Eastern Conference, marking the first time the Bruins were in the cellar since 1997.

Boston had a slow start to the year, and head coach Jim Montgomery was fired in November after a 8–9–3 record to begin 2024.

In December, the Bruins had a 9-4-1 record, including a perfect 6-0 mark on home ice. By the end of 2024, Boston was tied with Tampa for third place in the Atlantic Division.

But 2025 has been a nightmare for the Bruins. Boston has just 10 wins in 36 games, and captain Brad Marchand’s trade to Florida at the deadline officially signaled the end of an era in Beantown.

During this losing streak, former Hurricane Morgan Geekie leads Boston with 10 points.

David Pastrnak once again leads the Bruins in all offensive categories. He has tallied his sixth 80-point season and has become the fifth Boston player to score 35 or more goals in four consecutive seasons.

But Boston’s offense has been struggling, especially over the past two months. The Bruins have scored two or fewer goals 10 times over the last 15 games, including two in a loss to the Hurricanes on March 6.

If Boston loses tonight, the Bruins are officially eliminated from the playoffs.

It seems the Canes are locked into the second spot in the Metropolitan Division, but the team still has to play the games.

After last night’s game, a slow start after an emotional victory and a continued slump for Pyotr Kochetkov are concerns for the Hurricanes. One would expect the Red Wings to put in their best effort since they are now just four points out of the final Wild Card spot.

Resting injured or banged-up players is a priority, so there will likely be a similar lineup to last night. But the Canes must take care not to completely take their foot off the gas over the last seven games.

The important pieces for tonight are to give Frederik Andersen every opportunity to stay hot and to ensure every man on the ice goes to the next game in Buffalo in one piece.
