When the San Francisco Giants take the field for Tuesday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, they’ll be decked out in their new City Connect jerseys for the first time this season.

The second edition uniforms are black with wavy pinstripes, paired with white pants. The Giants lettering is in a psychedelic font outlined with a gradient purple and orange trim.

The design is much easier on the eyes than the bright white and Creamsicle orange ones the Giants wore for every Tuesday home game beginning in 2021. The new uniforms will also be worn for every Tuesday home game as well as on days when a postgame concert at Oracle Park is scheduled.

The updated uniforms feature symbols paying homage to San Francisco’s music history in the Fillmore and Haight-Ashbury. That includes a glove-shaped patch on the sleeve reminiscent of a Grateful Dead gig poster. The cap is black with a tie-dye orange and purple brim.

Black and orange are a familiar color combo. But the question is, why so much purple? That combo might make sense in a tie-dye, but purple isn’t a color one would normally associate with the San Francisco Giants.

But purple has a purpose. It’s a nod to the New York Giants, who from 1913-17 wore mauve somewhere on their uniform — including a purple plaid one in 1916 — because of nearby New York University.

Baseball rolled out the Nike-made City Connect uniforms for most teams — the Athletics and New York Yankees are the only teams that don’t use the alternates — in 2021 meant to draw inspiration from each big-league city. The Giants’ original edition might’ve been a little bright and distracting to the eye, but the team had a 30-16 record in games while wearing them.
