Ort is scheduled to throw a simulated inning Saturday at the team’s minor-league complex and Whitley to throw one inning Sunday. If they respond well, both will join Triple-A Sugar Land for their next outings, manager Joe Espada said.
Both will require “multiple” outings at Triple-A before the Astros consider activating them, Espada said.
Ort is returning from a left oblique muscle injury sustained early in spring training. Whitley is recovering from a left knee bone bruise.

The Houston Astros placed outfield prospect Jacob Melton on the minor-league 7-day injured list due to “upper back discomfort,” the team said Saturday.
Melton, rated the No. 2 prospect in the Astros’ system by Baseball America, dealt with back soreness in spring training that limited him to just six games in Grapefruit League play. He was visited by a trainer after making a diving catch March 18, stayed in that game but has not played in a game since.

“I think that has lingered,” Astros manager Joe Espada said. “We just want to try to get him right. That’s all we’re trying to do here. Hopefully we get him on the field here pretty soon.”
Melton, 24, reached Triple-A last season and posted a .260/.314/.405 slash line in 47 games there. His minor-league IL stint is retroactive to April 2.
