Monday’s Game 2 was a disaster for the Warriors, who somehow lost 135-131 after building a 31-point lead against the Clippers midway through the third quarter. Not only were they outscored 72-35 on their way to a stunning loss, the Warriors received a crushing blow earlier when center DeMarcus Cousins tore his left quad in the opening minutes and is out for the rest of the postseason.
The good news is that the two-time champions are one victory away in Los Angeles from setting a new NBA record for winning at least one road game in 20 straight postseason series. The Warriors are tied with the Heat with 19 straight series with at least one win on the road.
Golden State, which has won eight of its last nine games on the road against the Clippers, would also like to find a way to free up Kevin Durant from the Clippers’ stifling defensive ploy led by their chief irritant, Patrick Beverley. Durant had more turnovers than shots attempt (9 to 8) in Game 2 and fouled out late in the game as he continues to struggle with L.A.’s strategy of having a physical Beverley and at least one other help defender on him.
The Clippers have had a huge edge in bench play, thanks to the heroic efforts of Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell in the first two games. Williams (61 points) and Harrell (51) have combined 112 points in Games 1 and 2.
Clips guard Landry Shamet, who hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 16.5 seconds left Monday in Oakland, was also a challenge for the Warriors in the second half.
Game 4 of the best-of-7 series will be in Los Angeles on Sunday.
