Max’s Best New Show Grabs A Perfect 100% Critic Score

Hacks

Max

While the high profile White Lotus just ended on Max this weekend, the service has two big series lined up to go this week immediately. Next Sunday The Last of Us season 2 will take that Sunday spot. But tomorrow? That marks the return of Hacks for season 4.

Once again, Hacks has shown up with a perfect 100% score from critics. That may change but also two other seasons have a full 100%, with only season 3 with a 98%. There is only a single negative scored review of Hacks in this entire four season run right now. If you’re not familiar with the series, here’s the synopsis:

“Deborah Vance, a legendary Las Vegas-based stand-up comedian, needs to reinvent her aging act to avoid losing her residency at the Palmetto Casino. Ava Daniels is a young comedy writer who is unable to find work due to an insensitive tweet and her reputation for being self-centered and arrogant. When Ava’s agent sends her to work as Deborah’s new head writer, the two slowly bond as Ava pushes her new boss to take more risks and Deborah, in turn, helps Ava start to work through her personal problems.”

Hacks

Rotten Tomatoes

The show is not just well-liked by critics, but also fans, who have given it a stellar 8.2/10 on IMDB with 50,000 reviews in, and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It may not be one of the highest profile series out there, but it has been recognized by the Emmys dozens of times. Hacks has been nominated for 48 Emmys across three seasons, winning nine, including Best Actress for Jean Smart, Best Comedy Series and Best Writing for a Comedy Series.

Needless to say it’s probably one of the funniest currently-airing shows on TV, and I’d put it up alongside other series like Apple TV’s Shrinking and now The Studio, which has just begun its first season run to rave reviews. There is no indication that season 4 will be the last season for Hacks, as it’s a low-cost show for Max and WB that has attracted a ton of prestige praise for the service. So as long as everyone involved wants to keep making it, it’s going to continue, it seems.

The airing schedule here is a bit weird. Hacks will drop a two-episode premiere tomorrow, Thursday, April 10, the be weekly until episodes 7 and 8 air together for some reason, then the finale will be by itself on May 29 after its ten episode run. See you tomorrow for the start.
