Nick Blankenburg’s power play goal gets Nashville within one

At the 17:21 mark of the second period, Nick Blankenburg scored to get the Predators within one of Utah.

Blankenburg fired the puck from the blueline and beat Vejmelka on the far side to make it 2-1. Two Predators players were screening Vejmelka on the play, allowing the puck to sneak by.

It was Blankenburg’s first power play goal with Nashville. He’s been running with the team’s first power play unit since Roman Josi went down with an injury.

Josh Doan adds another, Utah up 2-0 on Predators

With a little over six minutes left in the second period, Utah goaltender Karel Vejmelka made a dramatic sprawling save on a 2-on-1 to keep the Predators from tying the game. Then, seconds later, Josh Doan gave Utah a 2-0 lead.

After an earlier shot rang off the pipe, the puck bounced into the slot and Doan pounced, sending it into the Nashville net.

Nick Bjugstad puts Utah HC up 1-0 over Nashville Predators

After killing off the first penalty of the game, the Predators looked ready to begin mounting an attack – but Utah’s Nick Bjugstad had other plans. He roofed a wrist shot by Juuse Saros, beating him in close on a tight angle, to make it 1-0 Utah.

Saros had the near post covered, but due to being an undersized goaltender, there was some open space for Bjugstad to take advantage of. It was Bjugstad’s seventh goal of the season.

Nashville Predators, Utah Hockey Club scoreless after first period

The Predators and Utah Hockey Club played a tight defensive game in the first 20 minutes. Utah’s third line with Jack McBain and Josh Doan nearly capitalized on an early turnover, but Juuse Saros made the stop. Later in the period, Predators rookie Matthew Wood nearly scored his first goal off a nice pass from Cole Smith, but Karel Vejmelka got enough on the save to keep it out.

At the end of the first period, Utah led in shots 11-5.
