The Arizona Diamondbacks‘ pitching depth took a hit two days before Opening Day.
Jordan Montgomery told reporters, including Arizona Republic‘s Nick Piecoro, that he will undergo Tommy John surgery next week. He will miss the 2025 season and possibly part of 2026.
The news comes days after Montgomery had his best outing of spring training when he allowed three hits, a walk and struck out two over 2⅔ scoreless innings. He was contending for the fifth and final spot in Arizona’s starting rotation.
Montgomery, who met with the Boston Red Sox in 2024 before signing with the Diamondbacks, went 8-7 with a 6.23 ERA over 25 games in 2024 in his first year with the Diamondbacks. The lef-hander hadn’t posted an ERA above 6 since the 2019 season when he was with the New York Yankees.
The struggles were enough for Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick to call Arizona’s signing of Montgomery a terrible decision.
“If anyone wants to blame anyone for Jordan Montgomery being a Diamondback, you’re talking to the guy that should be blamed,” Kendrick told Arizona Sports in October. “Because I brought it to (the front office’s) attention. I pushed for it. They agreed to it — it wasn’t in our game plan. You know when he was signed — right at the end of spring training. And looking back, in hindsight, a horrible decision to invest that money in a guy who performed as poorly as he did. It’s our biggest mistake this season from a talent standpoint. And I’m the perpetrator of that.”
Montgomery exercised his $22.5 million option despite Kendrick’s comments.
The decision to sign the 32-year-old certainly doesn’t look any better for the Diamondbacks.
Montgomery is set to become a free agent after the 2025 season.
