President of Simpson College found dead on Thursday

INDIANOLA, Iowa — Jay Byers, the president of Simpson College, has died, the school announced in a Thursday afternoon press conference.

Byers was found dead at the Sigler House, the president’s house, according to the college’s student newspaper, The Simpsonian. A wellness check was performed after he had failed to appear at meetings, something that was “extremely unsual,” school officials said. 

The student newspaper states the cause of death is unknown, but Indianola Police Chief Brian Sher said at the press conference they do not believe it was criminal in nature.

“This is stunning and devastating news to all of us on campus,” the school said Thursday.

Classes are canceled Friday, the school announced.

Byers, who graduated from Simpson College in 1993, was sworn in as the college’s 25th president in 2024.

Before his time as president, Byers was the CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership for 11 years.

The Simpson Student Government Association posted the following on social media:

“We are devastated at the news of the passing of President Byers. It was an honor to work with Jay to help make our campus a better place. On behalf of the Simpson student body, we are sending our thoughts to President Byers’ family. Rest in Peace, Jay Byers.”

Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley posted a statement following the news.

“I’ve known Jay Byers for decades as he’s served Iowans as a congressional staffer & leader making a big impact on economic development & education in our state Barbara & I are praying for Jay’s family & friends as we all cope w this tragic loss.”

“Jay was an exemplary member of our chapter and displayed the highest ideals of the fraternity. He was an outstanding leader who inspired countless members of the fraternity, Simpson College students, faculty, and staff,”Alpha Tau Omega – Beta Alpha Chapter said in a statement.
