Local law enforcement agencies were alerted Monday morning to a possible active shooter in or near Sheppard Air Force Base.
The base remains on lockdown, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
“Sheppard AFB Security Forces responded to an active shooter report near the southeast side of the base this morning at about 9:40 a.m.,” an SAFB media release said. “After immediately securing Sheppard Elementary School, they began conducting sweeps in the area.”
The reports of gunshots heard began shortly before 10 a.m. Friday, and both Wichita Falls Police and Wichita County sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene.
Units were dispatched to the vicinity of the Wichita Falls Regional Airport adjacent to the base.
Scanner traffic indicated the suspect may be a white male wearing a blue shirt and ballcap walking in the vicinity of the airport and a school.
A law enforcement command post was established at the base.
No injuries were immediately reported, and the presence of an active shooter had not been confirmed as of 10:20 a.m. Friday.
By 10:25 a.m. the Wichita County Sheriff’s Office reported sector sweeps of the base were underway, but so far no evidence of shots fired had been reported.
